Abstract

The study focused on the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total phenol content (TPC) of various natural raw material extracts, including Dendrobium officinale, Ganoderma lucidum, Gastrodia elata, Cornus officinalis, Eucommia ulmoides, Cistanche deserticola, Astragalus membranaceus, Panax quinquefolium, and Codonopsis pilosula. It was found that extracts from Eucommia ulmoides, Cornus officenalis, and Ganoderma lucidum effectively inhibited lipid peroxidation and, consequently, ferroptosis. Interestingly, the ability to inhibit ferroptosis was not necessarily linked to the TAC and TPC values, but rather to the amount of lipophilic antioxidants in the extracts. Eucommia ulmoides, Cornus officinalis, and Cistanche deserticola extracts contained the highest levels of polyphenols and TAC, while Ganoderma lucidum had the lowest levels. Analysis using ATR-FTIR spectra indicated that the anti-oxidant properties were primarily due to secondary metabolites of phenolic nature, polysaccharides, and terpenoids. The ability to prevent ferroptosis was attributed to the presence of non-phenolic substances, likely terpenoids, in the extracts. These findings suggest that these extracts have great potential in developing new therapeutic agents for ferroptosis-related diseases
