Susceptibility of aluminum alloys to local corrosion (layer corrosion, pitting, corrosion cracking, and corrosion fatigue) limits their industrial use. Optimizing the heat-treatment modes can considerably reduce effects of these corrosion types. The effect of quenching mode on corrosion resistance of the heat-hardenable aluminum alloy V91 of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu system, heat-treated according to the T3 mode, is investigated. Isothermal quenching of the samples in saline solutions was conducted consistently in two shaft furnaces. Polarization measurements were taken using a potentiodynamic method. The structural examinations were performed for obtaining data to forecast corrosion characteristics. The dependence of quenching modes on corrosion resistance of heat-hardenable aluminum alloy is found. Based on experimental data, kinetic charts are built which can be used to forecast a structure and properties of alloy products after heat treatment.
