Abstract

Analysis of works on non-destructive testing of the polymer composite materials was based on the carbon fiber and showed main and dangerous defects in their design including fiber deformation and rupture, incomplete fusion and impact-induced delamination, as well as fatigue cracks occurring under action of the cyclic loads. Such defects could hardly be detected by the non-destructive testing methods. The paper concludes that these difficult-to-diagnose defects could be identified by the SV polarization normal waves. According to results of analyzing the available data on simulation of the SV polarization normal waves propagation, it becomes important to introduce the classical deformation theory to solve the problem of simulating the defect geometry effect on the normal wave parameters. As a result of simulating influence of the planar defect (crack) on propagation of the normal waves with the SV polarization, the paper proposes a criterion for evaluating the crack inclination angle in the material. Besides, it identifies range alterations in the phase rates making it possible to determine the crank inclination, its delamination, and vertical orientation. Experimental verification of samples produced from polymer composite material based on the carbon fiber with the planar cracks embedded in the plate thickness confirmed results of simulating these cracks effect on propagation parameters of the SV polarization normal wave
